Minsk, 10 December: The year 2008 might become the last one in the history of Belarusian entrepreneurship as many sole proprietors will become unemployed," said Viktar Harbachow, head of For Free Development of Private Enterprise movement, speaking at October Square where sole proprietors are holding an unsanctioned rally.
He called on the rally participants "not to pretend that nothing is happening" and rise up against presidential edict No 760, which mandates that starting from 1 January 2008 sole proprietors will be able to employ only close relatives and family members.
He said that sole proprietors should insist on the urgent adoption of a small business law.
[Passage omitted: other business leaders have addressed the rally]
There are currently several hundred people on October Square. The square is surrounded by the police.
