While Research in Motion ( aka RIM) settled a long standing patent dispute in the USA today, to the widespread delight of RIM shareholders and all American Blackberry users, an emerging nanotech breakthrough (instead of legal fix) could soon block cell phone calls around the country, to the dismay of the entire wireless industry
The Chicago Tribune reported on March 1, 2006 that a Rochester N.Y. startup firm, NaturalNano has developed a high-tech nano-augmented paint that blocks cell-phone calls.
The paint blends in halloysite clay nanotubes stuffed with copper nano particles to effectively block cell transmissions,
NaturalNano combines this passive signal blocking paint with an active radio frquency-filtering device that collects phone signals from outside a shielded space, allowing certain transmissions to proceed while blocking others.
This signal blocking nano paint could become a nightmare for people addicted to their Blackberries, while presenting a dream solution for people wanting to avoid distractions from errant callers during church services, in the opera/ballet /concert or in a movie or theater performance
This could also be a dream-come-true for hospitals and airlines who could now allow cell phones in limited spaces while protecting and shielding others.
"You could use this in a concert hall, allowing cell phones to work before the concert and during breaks, but shutting them down during the performance," said Michael Riedlinger, president of NaturalNano of Rochester, N.Y.
