According to Siberian media outlets, residents of Siberia want to be viewed as a new nation, as they are aware of their non-Russian identity, indicate activists on the Web who appealed during the 2010 Census to Siberians to register their ethnicity as "Siberians" and not as "Russians".
There is lot of other new nations consisting of former "Russians" who want the same.
"A new ethnicity, "Siberians" will emerge in the Russian Federation", - said the head of Russia's Federal State Statistics Service. Information about that appeared in the media this spring. However, the Kremlin almost immediately rejected the idea, and there followed "a clarification" that the findings are premature and that there was no intentions to recognize any new nations at all, and as for the Siberian activists, there is a column "other nationalities" in Census papers.
"There is a number signs that Russia enters the stage of civilizational decline", Moscow political analyst Stanislav Belkovsky says, "One of these symptoms is the awakening of new national identities, out of which protostates for these new nations will emerge".
