Just as people in the North America were getting innovative after the first energy embargo in the 1970's, we see signs of the same creativity as gasoline prices start to edge up today.
People are looking for alternatives. Urban Moon-shiners are making a come back; not just for drinking but for your car too. [ but we are just catching up to Ukraine & Russia in U-Brew, where "samohonka" is a time-honoured tradition-Walter Derzko]
In a recent RunningonEmpty energy forum, one urban observer wrote:
"My friend in New Jersey told me of something strange. People where he lives are beginning to resurrect the lost art of moon-shining. Mostly, it is being done by people who are trying to make their own version of "Hamburger Helper" for gasoline. They mix 15% homebrew alcohol to 85% gasoline (something like E-85 in reverse) and run their cars on that.
Also, due to high fuel costs, the price of alcoholic beverages is starting to climb, so there have sprung up clandestine parties where homemade hooch is being served. He describes these functions as "a cross between a speakeasy and a rave"."
and as we've seen, you can make fuel out of just about any carbon source; see Sept 21, 2006 post # 26) Alt Smart Energy - Roadkill?
