IEEE Spectrum reported last week that two teams –one from Cal Tech and the other from the University of California, Berkeley in the USA have reported that they could increase the ability of silicon nanowires to convert heat into electric current by as much as 100 times. The discovery was reported January 10th in Nature.
The discovery could lead to new ways to get more power out of car engines, create engery from turbine heat, cool computer chips, and design better refrigerators.
